The Balvu County Museum invites you to visit the 9th International Painting Plein Air "Valdis Bušs 2025" painting exhibition. The plein air, which took place in Viļaka this summer, brought together six artists from Serbia, Germany, India, Lithuania, Latvia and China, who interpreted the landscapes of Latgale, paying tribute to the legacy of the outstanding painter Valdis Bušs. The exhibition, which reflects intercultural dialogue and various visual languages, can be viewed from November 28, 2025 to January 24, 2026

​Valdis Bušs 2025 International Plein Air

Viļaka, a picturesque town in eastern Latvia, proudly hosts an exhibition honoring the legacy of Valdis Bušs — a celebrated Latvian landscapist born near Viļaka — and showcasing the town’s growing role as an international hub for artistic excellence.

The exhibition features the work of six professional artists who participated in the 9th Valdis Bušs International Plein Air Painting Residency. Their paintings, created during their stay in Viļaka, reflect the region’s natural beauty and the spirit of open-air landscape tradition, reinterpreted through diverse contemporary styles and techniques.

This collective exhibition is a testament to the residency’s core values: quality, professionalism, and sustainable cultural growth. It invites both locals and international visitors to engage with Viļaka not only as a place of rich history and scenic charm, but also as a dynamic space for creative dialogue.

The exhibition is open to the public until October 24, 2025.

The Dark Spring


Spring is traditionally a time of renewal, yet it carries within it a subtle, enigmatic shadow.
The Dark Spring presents a series of paintings crated around Gothenburg in Sweden, capturing the landscapes quiet transformation form winter's restraint to the first signs of bloom.

Painted partly en plein air, these works convey the raw atmosphere of nature and evoke and underlying, primal mystery. The exhibition invites collectors in a private setting to experience spring not merely as lightness and awakening, but as a delicate balance of stillness and emergence, where light and darkness coexist.

Atmospheric Landscapes

Ernesto Heen shows atmospheric landscapes in a picturesque walk through his watercolour paintings. 
The fleetingness of light and color, the magic of the view and the feeling of speed and movement during the painting process are aspects that can be experienced in his pictures. As part of his teaching activities the watercolour medium took a special place in Ernestos painting repertoire.

Connections

Besides the realistic representation of cables and telephone poles these paintings carry the idea of connections between people and their interactions everyone experiences in life. The works reflect on the coexistence of nature and the doing of mankind. It is an invitation to explore the relation of the fleeting moment against the persistence of things.

The Connection group, a work consisting of six paintings, has gone on public view at the Artrooms 2016 exhibition in London and in the 2017 on Gallery view at the Le Dame Art Gallery in London.
The were also exhibited in 2019 at the Gallery Kulturbotschaft in Hamburg and later in the year in parts during a solo exhibition in Schleiz.
