Spring is a time of new beginnings – and yet it harbours a mysterious shadow.
Under the title The Dark Spring, this series presents works created in the environs of Gothenburg. In these paintings, the artist explores the profound impressions left on him by the Swedish landscape as it shifts from winter’s grip to the season of blossoming.
Some of the works were painted en plein air – outdoors, beneath the open sky, in direct dialogue with wind, light, and ever-changing weather. This closeness to nature is reflected in the atmospheric intensity of the paintings: the artist captures not only what is visible, but also what remains unspoken – a sense of something primordial lurking beneath the surface.
The Swedish vår – that fickle, often contradictory spring – reveals itself here not in radiant lightness, but as a time of transition and quiet drama. Between bare branches and the first blossoms, between mist and shafts of sunlight, there emerges a field of tension in which light and darkness stand side by side as equals. The Dark Spring invites us to see this moment between stagnation and awakening with fresh eyes – as an inner landscape, a reflection of a nature that withholds as much as it reveals.
